The Complemento de Ayuda para la Infancia (CAPI) is the per-child supplement to the Ingreso Mínimo Vital, paid by Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social (INSS) under Real Decreto-ley 20/2022. It is granted to households with dependent children whose income and assets fall below the CAPI thresholds, and the amount per child increases as the child gets younger (highest band 0-3, lower bands 3-6 and 6-18). Households already receiving IMV get CAPI added automatically; households below the CAPI ceiling but above the strict IMV ceiling can apply for CAPI on its own. The benefit is paid monthly via Seguridad Social and is exempt from personal income tax.

Eligibility

You may receive CAPI if:

  • You have dependent children under 18 in your household
  • Your annual household income is below the CAPI threshold for your composition (single-parent and large-family thresholds are higher)
  • Your net assets are within the CAPI asset cap
  • You have legal residence in Spain (typically at least 1 year, with shorter rules for victims of trafficking, asylees, etc.)
  • You and the children are registered in the same household with the Ayuntamiento (empadronamiento)
